From the ground underfoot, raw emotion breaks out.
When I extruded earth from a piping bag, a raw, visceral feeling resonated in me.
It was a method I had been testing since my years of entrance exams. This expression — drawing the traces of insect burrows, or a maze — burst out all at once with the release of passing into university, an acquittal from exam painting.
In the two-person exhibition I presented right after entering university, I smeared extruded earth onto discarded materials. The forms the extruder gave the earth called up a visceral sensation, the opposite of anything beautiful, and I deliberately used that, as a counter. An eruption of raw emotion — at that time, expression for me was to make my own interior erupt.
The forms of erupted earth developed into cord, and then into straw rope. There was a demand in me to unfold them more three-dimensionally. Naturally, once pushed out into space, they came to connect with other things, and to be encroached upon by them.
I could not optimistically believe that a work was complete as an object there on the spot. It seemed to me that self-containment — merely discharging my own energy — would not suffice. To settle for the exhibition space alone as another world felt like denying the reality in which I myself live.
I gave the work the title “Connection”, aiming to fuse with other existences, and yet I was confronted with the contradiction of not being able to fuse. That led me to question the meaning of self-expression, and the meaning shared between inside and outside; I experienced first-hand an ambivalence that holds both the interference and the opposition of the two.
From then on my expression swung in the opposite direction, and my own physiology was set aside.
The forms of erupting earth gradually evolved into an expression of coating straw rope with earth. What I needed was no longer a material applied onto an object, but one capable of invading space three-dimensionally. Yet to invade space as a three-dimensional form is also to connect with other things. Rather than existing as a self-contained object, it had to link and merge with other presences. As the title "Connection" suggests, I became constantly aware of the necessity of looking outward rather than remaining self-contained — simply releasing my own energy was no longer enough. This expression became a transitional one.
Looking outward developed into the question: what is the essence that constitutes the outside world? Connection with the outside inevitably involves conflict, and includes the zone of interference between the two. The concept that existence is ambivalent, while each side contains the other, began here.
Earth and straw rope were used to express a collision of energy.
Finger painting was used to express white transforming into black and black into white, violently colliding and mixing together. The two works were inverted in black and white, and contrasted in method: one mixed while still wet, the other concealed after drying.
